Other comments on the Evaluation

General considerations

The mastery of the linguistic and communicative competences of this course will be assessed on the basis of several partial tests for each of the skills specified in this syllabus. The specific dates for each test will be announced by the lecturer(s) in class well in advance.

The final grade of the course will be calculated taking into account all the skills dealt with throughout the term, with the distribution indicated in the previous section and detailed in this section.

In the first edition of records there are two assessment systems: continuous and exam-only. The default mode will be the continuous assessment option, unless the student explicitly communicates their preference for the exam-only assessment system. Students who opt for the exam-only assessment option must inform the lecturer(s) no later than the second week of the course.

Participation in one of the assessment systems implies the impossibility of participating in the other. The completion of one or more activities implies the acceptance of the continuous assessment system; likewise, the absence of one or more activities implies that the course will be followed by means of exam-only assessment.

The students evaluated through the continuous assessment system will not be able to take the official single exam of the exam-only assessment system in the first edition of records. Their grade in the first edition of records will correspond to the calculation of the grades obtained in the different continuous assessment activities and tests. The official single exam in the first edition of records is also not considered as a resit exam for the parts of the competences failed in the continuous assessment.

FIRST EDITION OF RECORDS

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

In order to be evaluated by the continuous assessment system, it is essential to participate in all the continuous assessment activities that will be carried out throughout the term, as well as to submit all the activities before the deadline.

  • Use of English (Grammar & Vocabulary) = 35%
  • Listening = 30%
  • Speaking = 35%

The continuous assessment actvities will take place during teaching hours, unless previously agreed with the lecturer(s). The dates will be announced in class at the beginning of the term and with sufficient time for preparation.

In order to pass the subject, it will be essential to achieve a minimum grade of 5 points as an average grade (out of 10), being 5 points the minimum grade required in each of the three skills: Use of English (35%), listening (30%) and speaking (35%). That is to say, each of the skills of the course must be passed with a 5, and failure in one of the skills implies an overall failure of the course in this edition of records. The same conditions apply in the second edition of records, regardless of the assessment system.

Students may be examined in the second edition of records only on the failed part(s). If a student does not pass at this second opportunity, they must be examined on all the skills in subsequent courses.

EXAM-ONLY ASSESSMENT

The exam-only assesssment will take place on the official date approved by the FFT Board. It is the student's responsibility to consult the dates on the Faculty's website.

The final grade of students opting for this exam-only assessment system will be calculated on the basis of the grades obtained on this official date. The test will consist of the necessary parts to evaluate all the skills dealt with during the term, in parallel to the continuous assessment system, unless otherwise indicated by the lecturer(s). The value of each of the skills will be the same as in the continuous assessment option: Use of English (35%), listening (30%) and speaking (35%).

In order to pass the course, it will be essential to achieve a minimum grade of 5 points as an average grade, being 5 points the minimum score required in each of the evaluated skills (Use of English (35%), listening (30%) and speaking (35%)). That is to say, each of the skills of the course must be passed with a 5, and failure in one of the skills implies an overall failure of the course in this edition of records.

Students will be able to be examined in the second edition of records only on the failed part(s). If a student does not pass at this second opportunity, they will have to be examined on all the skills in the following academic year.

SECOND EDITION OF RECORDS

The examination in the second edition of records, regardless of the assessment option chosen in the first edition of records, will be held on the official date approved by the FFT Board. It is the student's responsibility to check the dates on the Faculty's website. Students who have to do the oral presentation will agree the date of this test with the lecturer(s).

The final grade of the students who take this exam-only assessment system will be calculated on the basis of the grades obtained on this official date. The test will consist of the necessary parts to evaluate all the skils dealt with throughout the term. The value of each of the skills will be the same as in continuous assessment option: Use of English (35%), listening (30%) and speaking (35%).

If a student does not pass at this second opportunity, they must be examined on all the skills in the following academic year.

Important remarks

The assessment will take into account not only the relevance and quality of the content of the answers, but also their linguistic and stylistic correctness. Otherwise, the activity may result in a fail.

Total or partial plagiarism in any type of task or activity will result in automatic failure of the entire course, regardless of the tests already taken and/or passed. Claiming ignorance of what constitutes plagiarism will not exempt students from their responsibility in this regard.

It is the students' responsibility to periodically check their e-mail, consult the materials and news through the eLearning platform, and be aware of the dates of the tests. Exam-only assessment dates are announced on the FFT website. Continuous assessment dates are announced in class well in advance, except for spontaneous tests. There is no obligation to communicate assessment dates through the eLearning platform.
