Other comments on the Evaluation

General considerations

The mastery of the linguistic and communicative competences of this course will be assessed on the basis of several tests for each of the skills specified in this syllabus ('Assessment'). The specific dates for each test will be announced by the lecturer(s) in class well in advance.

The final grade of the course will be calculated taking into account all the skills dealt with throughout the term, with the percentages indicated in the previous section and detailed in this section.

In the first edition of records there are two assessment systems: continuous and exam-only. The default system will be the continuous assessment option, unless the student explicitly communicates their preference for the exam-only assessment system. Students who opt for the exam-only assessment option must inform the lecturer(s) no later than the second week of the course.

Participation in one of the assessment systems implies the impossibility of participating in the other. Taking the first continuous assessment test implies the acceptance of the continuous assessment system, so the absence to later assessment tests will result in the student's failure in the subject. Likewise, the student's absence to the first continuous assessment test implies that they will follow the course by means of the exam-only assessment system, so they will not be allowed to take any other continuous assessment tests.

Students assessed through the continuous assessment system will not be able to take the official exam of the exam-only assessment system in the first edition of records. Their grade in the first edition of records will correspond to the calculation of the grades obtained in the different continuous assessment activities and tests. In the first edition of records, the official exam of the exam-only assessment system cannot be taken as a retake exam for those students who fail some component(s) in the continuous assessment system.

FIRST EDITION OF RECORDS

1. Continuous assessment system

To be evaluated by the continuous assessment system, it is essential to participate in all the continuous assessment activities/tests that will be carried out throughout the term, as well as to submit all the activities before the deadline.

  • Use of English (Grammar and Vocabulary) = 30%
  • Pronunciation = 20%
  • Listening = 25%
  • Speaking = 25%

The continuous assessment tests will take place throughout the term, unless otherwise indicated by the lecturer(s). The specific dates will be announced in class well in advance.

To pass the course, it will be essential to obtain a minimum grade of 5 points as an average grade (out of 10), being 5 points the minimum grade required in each of the evaluated skills: Use of English (30%), Pronunciation (20%), Listening (25%) and Speaking (25%). In other words, each of the skills of the course must be passed with a 5, and failure in one of the skills implies an overall failure in the course in this edition of records. The same conditions apply in the second edition of records, regardless of the assessment system.

In the second edition of records students can retake only the failed part(s). Sudents who do not pass the course at this second opportunity must be examined on all the skills in subsequent academic courses.

2. Exam-only assessment system

The exam-only assesssment exam will take place on the official date approved by the FFT Board. It is the students' responsibility to consult the dates on the Faculty's website.

The final grade of students opting for this exam-only assessment system will be calculated on the basis of the grades obtained on this official exam. The test will consist of the necessary parts to evaluate all the skills dealt with during the term, in parallel to the continuous assessment system, unless otherwise indicated by the lecturer(s). The percentage of each of the skills will be identical to that in the continuous assessment option: Use of English (30%), Pronunciation (20%), Listening (25%) and Speaking (25%).

To pass the course, it will be essential to obtain a minimum grade of 5 points as an average grade, being 5 points the minimum score required in each of the evaluated skills (Use of English 30%, Pronunciation 20%, Listening 25% and Speaking 25%). In other words, each of the skills of the course must be passed with a 5, and failure in one of the skills implies an overall failure in the course in this edition of records.

In the second edition of records, students will be able to retake only the failed part(s). Student who do not pass the course at this second opportunity will have to be examined on all the skills in subsequent academic years.

SECOND EDITION OF RECORDS

The exam in the second edition of records, regardless of the assessment option chosen in the first edition of records, will be held on the official date approved by the FFT Board. It is the students' responsibility to check the dates on the Faculty's website. Students who have to retake the Speaking skill will agree upon a date for this test with the lecturer(s).

The final grade of the students who opt for this exam-only assessment system will be calculated on the basis of the grades obtained on this official exam. The test will consist of the necessary parts to evaluate all the skils dealt with throughout the term. The value of each of the skills will be identical to that in the first edition of records: Use of English 30%, Pronunciation 20%, Listening 25% and Speaking 25%.

To pass the course, it will be essential to achieve a minimum grade of 5 points as an average grade, being 5 points the minimum score required in each of the evaluated skills (Use of English 30%, Pronunciation 20%, Listening 25% and Speaking 25%). In other words, each of the skills of the course must be passed with a 5, and failure in one of the skills implies an overall failure in the course in this edition of records.

Student who do not pass the course at this second opportunity must be examined on all the skills in subsequent academic courses.

IMPORTANT REMARKS:

Assessment will take into account not only the relevance and quality of the content of the answers but also their linguistic and stylistic correctness. If this is not the case, the evaluation test may result in a fail.

Total or partial plagiarism in any type of work or activity will result in direct failure in the subject as a whole, regardless of the tests already taken and/or passed. Claiming ignorance of the implications and consequences of plagiarism will not exempt students from their responsibility in this respect.

It is the students' responsibility to check email regularly, to consult materials and news through the e-learning platform, and to be aware of the dates of the tests. Exam-only assessment dates are announced on the FFT website. Continuous assessment dates are announced in class well in advance, except for spontaneous tasks. There is no obligation to communicate assessment dates through the e-learning platform.
