This subject is focused on natural areas, their management and conservation, as a basis for an ecosystem-centred conservation of biodiversity, in contrast with the the more conventional approach of species-centred conservation. The subject encompasses general topics about natural areas, types of protected areas and general principles for their design and planning, their socio-economic context as well as planning and management tools.
