 Students Access Admissions

Routes in and access requirements

Royal Decree (RD) 1892/2008, of 14th November, modified by RD 558/2010, regulates the conditions for access to official university education at Undergraduate level and the admissions procedures at Spanish public universities. These norms state that the following groups can access university education:
  • Students holding the baccalaureate qualification who have passed the university access exam (PAU): articles 37 and 50.2 of Organic Law 2/2006, of 3rd May on Education.
  • Students coming from educational systems of Member States or other States with which Spain has signed International Agreements: article 38.5 of Organic Law 2/2006, of 3rd May on Education.
  • Students from foreign education systems, after application for recognition of their foreign qualification as equivalent to Baccalaureate.
  • Students holding the Higher Technician qualification corresponding to Vocational Training (FP) and Arts Education or Higher Sports Technician corresponding to Sports Education: articles 44, 53 and 65 of Organic Law 2/2006, on Education.
  • Over-25s: Organic Law 6/2001, of 21 December on Universities.
  • People who can demonstrate they have professional or work experience, as laid down in article 42.4 of Organic Law 6/2001, of 21 December on Universities, in the text given by Law 4/2007, of 12 April, which modifies the former.
  • Over-45s: article 42.4 of Organic Law 6/2001, of 21 December on Universities, in the text given by Law 4/2007, of 12 April, which modifies the former.
  • University qualifications: Access is available to anyone holding an official university Degree qualification or equivalent; anyone holding an official university Diploma, Technical Architect, Technical Engineer, Graduate, Architect, Engineer that correspond to the previous regulations on university education or equivalent qualifications; anyone who has partially taken university studies abroad or who has finished them but not obtained equivalence recognition in Spain and wishes to continuing studying at a Spanish university. In this case, the original university must have recognised at least 30 credits.
Entry profile
Ideally, students will have entered though one of the above routes and have a clear vocation for Mining Engineering. The specific personal features (aptitudes, sensitivities, particular capabilities, etc.) and academic attributes that are sought after in ideal candidates for the Degree in Mining and Energy Resources Engineering at the University of Vigo are:
  • Knowledge of core sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Geology.
  • Concern for issues related to natural resources and interest in knowing about phenomenon linked to them, together with a concern for environmental issues.
  • Capacity for analysis, summary and logical reasoning.
  • Basic skills in oral and written expression and reading comprehension.
  • Basic social skills for team work.
  • Willingness to be an active part of the teaching-learning process, concern for quality and motivation to achieve objectives.

Information Channels
Royal Decree RD 1393/2007, of 29 October, which lays down the regulations for official university teaching, specifies the obligation of Spanish Universities to make systems available to students for information and entry and guidance procedures for new students.
To meet this requirement, the University of Vigo offers information and guidance to new students through its vida and mergúllate programs. At the same time, the University de Vigo has established lines of actions regarding information systems before enrolment and the entry processes and guidance for new students.

The HS Mining Enginnering has developed further lines of actions of its own that support scientific diffusion and transfer, and reception and guidance for new students.

Student guidance
The University of Vigo has a series of support and guidance services for students once they are enrolled. Furthermore, the HS Mining Engineering develops additional lines of action to provide guidance and support for students enrolled within the Tutorial Action Plan (Spanish Acronym TAP).

Credits transfer and recognition

Students coming from other degree qualifications
At a meeting on 23 July 2008 the University of Vigo’s Governing Council passed the “Norms for transfer and recognition of credits for qualifications adapted to EEES”. These norms establish the following basic rules:
  1. Provided that the qualification to which access is sought belongs to the same field of study, the credits corresponding to basic training subjects for that field will be subject to recognition.
  2. Also subject to recognition will be those credits obtained for other basic training subjects belonging to the field of study of the qualification to which access is sought.
  3. All other credits can be recognised by the university by taking into account their suitability in terms of competences and knowledge associated with the those subjects and those included in the syllabus or that are generally underlying.

Following the norms: the following table for basic training subject recognition has been proposed:

Any credits recognition beyond the above, and for what at any time is agreed for study on degree courses at other Mining Schools, is the responsibility of the Academic Committee, delegated by the Qualifications Board. Before taking any decisions on recognition, the Committee will ask for a non-binding report from the lecturers responsible for the subject for which recognition is sought. Any decision will be taken bearing in mind any coincidences of skills, contents and number of credits between the subject taken and that for which equivalence is sought.

Higher Cycles in Professional Training (Formación Profesional)
In Article 8 “Recognition of other studies or professional activities” of the Regulations for transfer and recognition of credits for qualifications adapted to the EEES it states “in compliance with the criteria and directives set by the Government and the procedure set by the University, accredited work experience, higher level arts teaching, higher level professional training, professional training in fine arts and higher level design, higher level sports studies and other subjects established by the Government and Regional Authority may be recognised as equivalents to university study.”

Recognition of credits for other activities
The Regulations also state that students can obtain academic recognition in credits for participation in university activities (culture, sports, student representation, solidarity and cooperation work) to a maximum of 6 credits from the total for the curriculum being taken. These credits will be deducted from the optional credits the student must take according to the recognition list for elective credits and ECTS of the University of Vigo.
