 Presentation

The energy sector is closely linked to sustainable development, economic growth and environmental impact. It is vital to reach a balance in future growth, with reduced energy consumption and minimised environmental impact. Given the huge importance of the energy sector in economic development, measures taken in this field must be compatible with three fundamental principles: competitiveness, supply safety and environmental protection, in a search for sustainable growth.

A factor for competitiveness in Spain in general, and Galicia in particular, is the dynamism of the renewable energy sector. Spain is currently a world reference point for renewable energy use, with enterprises not only supplying the national market but also devoting a major part of their production to foreign markets.

Energy efficiency is of great importance in construction and so sustainable housing has become a top priority in Europe. This means that the building process should be wholly compatible with the environment and in such a context energy is one of the most relevant aspects.

Over recent years, both public and private sectors have been demanding the establishment of Energy studies. The exponential growth experienced by the Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency markets has led to a growing demand for specialised workers in companies, which in turn has led to the need to train experts in these innovative fields.

This degree aims to provide high level training of the type required by future professionals who will work in the area of energy processes engineering, ranging from generation to various energy applications. It also provides necessary training for the development of efficient and sustainable systems and technologies.

The general approach, therefore, is to focus the training of engineers on the processes that take place from generation to end users of thermal or electrical energy. That is, as present day and future energy professionals dealing with processes and machines, their organisation, management and costs.

Such training is necessarily multi-disciplinary and has an overall perspective that essentially considers technical and economic aspects while dealing with issues regarding energy efficiency, energy production technologies with emphasis on new sources of renewable energy, storage systems, transport and distribution, energy markets, and so on. Underlying all this is a commitment to respect for the environment and sustainable growth.
